Dundee City Council's Liberal Democrat Finance Convener Cllr Fraser Macpherson today called on the Government to give a clear commitment to help and support the 10 900 Dundee people on incapacity benefit. The follows yesterday's new welfare reform proposals were announced by Work & Pensions Secretary of State John Hutton MP.
Cllr Fraser Macpherson, Convener of Dundee City Council's Finance Committee, has expressed his astonishment at the "highly misleading and inaccurate" comments from SNP spokesperson Cllr Joe Fitzpatrick on the subject of Equal Pay and the Single Status Agreement.
Dundee Liberal Democrats today highlighted the important fact that on January 27th we remember all the victims of the Holocaust - the 6 million Jews, the Roma and Sinti people, gay men and lesbians, the mentally and physically disabled, religious and political opponents of the Nazis, black people and many Slavic people. By remembering the victims of the Holocaust and honouring the survivors and rescuers who are still with us we reaffirm our shared goals of mutual understanding and justice.
Cllr Helen Dick, Dundee City Council's Liberal Democrat Vice Convener of Environmental Services and Sustainability, has today (24th January 2006) reinforced the importance of environmental issues to core Liberal Democrat policies.
Commenting on the report of the Arbuthnott Commission released last week, Cllr Fraser Macpherson, Liberal Democrat Group Leader on Dundee City Council said, "The report's contents are hugely disappointing. One of the big failings of the current electoral system to the Scottish Parliament is the regional list voting system, which creates two classes of MSPs. Although the Commission recommends a move to the fair Single Transferable Vote System for the European Elections, it merely recommends tinkering with the Scottish Parliament electoral system - this will not resolve the problems.¨
Dundee Liberal Democrats have welcomed new Liberal Democrat proposals to deal with the chaos in the Child Support Agency and give hope to the hundreds of thousands of parents and children being failed by the current set-up.
