"Nuclear not the future," say Dundee Liberal Democrats

11 May 2006

Dundee City Council Liberal Democrat Vice Convener of Environmental Services and Sustainability, Cllr Helen Dick, said today (Thursday 11th May) that she fully backed comments made earlier this week by Jo Swinson MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Scottish Secretary, that the future shape of the UK's National Grid must not be weighted in favour of new nuclear power.

Speaking at Scottish Question Time in the House of Commons this Tuesday, Jo Swinson called for a forward-looking approach to renewal of the National Grid to allow Scotland to make the most of its potential for renewable energy generation.

Cllr Helen Dick added, "If we build more nuclear power stations in the future, even more money which could be invested in genuinely sustainable and environmentally friendly forms of power generation will be wasted. Liberal Democrats feel strongly that we should be investing in a sustainable future and not going down the prohibitively expensive nuclear route."
