Liberal Democrats delighted at Dundee progress
Liberal Democrats came a very close second in the Strathmartine by-election. There was only 32 votes between the winning SNP candidate and the LibDem challenger Jenny Blain – 1426 votes to 1394.
Liberal Democrat Group Leader Councillor Fraser Macpherson said:
“Our Strathmartine vote share was up over 8% and although the SNP very narrowly won, their vote share dropped 10.3%, in line with the SNP national decline. Despite nonsense spin by Labour that it was a two-horse race between Labour and SNP, Labour actually came third. It is the Liberal Democrats who are the growing party in Dundee.”
“Watch us increase our council representation at the next council election. Our spectacular increase in Strathmartine is down to the hard work of the local campaign team led by Jenny Blain and Councillor Daniel Coleman.
“We are so grateful to Jenny for her campaign and also to Outi Maattanen-Bourke who was the Scottish Liberal Democrat candidate at the Lochee by-election the same day.”
Scottish Liberal Democrat Leader Alex Cole-Hamilton added:
“After transfers we ended up being just 32 votes behind the SNP here in Strathmartine, Dundee - once their heartland, overhauling Labour and taking another big leap forward. All over the country local Liberal Democrat campaign teams are proving that we’re going to be part of what’s next.”
