LibDem Planning & Transport Convener welcomes 'positive moves' on residents' parking

17 Oct 2007

Dundee City Council's Liberal Democrat Planning & Transport Convener, Cllr Fraser Macpherson, has today (Wednesday 17th October) welcomed a report being considered by city councillors next week which could result in more residents' parking schemes in the City.

The report recommends approval of plans to carry out consultation to find out people's views on extending existing schemes.

Cllr Macpherson said, "Many people in our residential areas experience parking difficulties, mainly because of problems generated by motorists who live outwith their areas.

"We want to be able to provide some help, as we have done by introducing residents' parking schemes in some areas of Dundee, and the first step will be finding out if there is support for similar initiatives elsewhere.

"There are different residents' parking schemes that could be used, such as residents' only parking, mixed-use parking bays and mixed use parking with pay and display machines - the type that could be introduced would depend on how it would best suit a particular area."

The report to committee states that five areas in Dundee have been identified for possible residents' parking schemes:

West End: Problems generated for residents because most streets are narrow and there is high demand for parking because of high density of housing as well as staff and students at the university seeking places to park.

Dudhope: Residents experience problems because spaces are taken up by commuters who work in the city centre and limited on-site parking at Dundee College.

Hilltown: Problems for residents as a result of high density of housing and commuters using the area.

Princes Street: Parking difficulties for residents because of large number of homes and commuter demand.

Invergowrie Drive: Problems for residents on the drive and adjoining streets because they are used by staff and visitors to Ninewells Hospital.
