Iraq : Dundee LibDem Convener welcomes Court of Appeal decision for families

28 Jul 2006

Dundee Liberal Democrat local party Convener, Raymond Lawrie, has today (Friday 28th July) welcomed the decision of the Court of Appeal earlier this week that families of British soldiers killed in Iraq were entitled to apply for a judicial review of the legality of the war.

"This is a significant step forward for the families," said Raymond .

"The Labour government has opposed the families at every point and will continue to do so at the full hearing of the court on 6th November.

"The soldiers' families are in the vanguard on this issue, but all the people of Britain and Iraq have the right to know how and why this disastrous foreign policy came about," concluded Raymond.

Michael Moore MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Foreign Secretary said, "This judgment brings us one step closer to what the Government fears and the public expect: a full public inquiry on the war against Iraq.

"It is scandalous that the Government has for so long evaded scrutiny of the justification and legality of the invasion. With Iraq on the brink of civil war and a 100 deaths a day, the Government can no longer sweep this under the carpet."
