"ID cards a gift to fraudsters" say Dundee LibDems

7 Nov 2006

Following yesterday's defence of plans for a national identity register and ID cards by New Labour Prime Minister Tony Blair, Dundee Liberal Democrats have today (Tuesday 7th November) said that the Labour ID cards project is "a waste of public money and a gift to fraudsters."

Liberal Democrat Shadow Home Secretary, Nick Clegg MP said, "Tony Blair must be living in cloud-cuckoo land if he seriously believes that the creation of the world's largest identity database will be a magic cure for identity fraud."

Locally, Dundee LibDem spokesperson Murray Dick said, "Labour claims that the ID card society would protect vulnerable people and make it easier to access services. The reality is that it will waste billions of pounds of taxpayers' money which would be better used providing public services. ID cards are simply not wanted by the British public and should be rejected."
