Dundee Liberal Democrat Councillor Fraser Macpherson today (Tuesday 21st February 2006) welcomed last week's progress report from the Scottish Executive on the modernisation process in Scotland's schools.

The national agenda set out five key themes:

  • heightened expectations, stronger leadership and ambition
  • more freedom for teachers and schools
  • greater choice and opportunity for pupils
  • better support for learning
  • tougher, intelligent accountabilities

Just over a year after 69 reforms were promised in the programme, more than a half have already been delivered.

Speaking today, Cllr Macpherson, a former Convener of the City Council's Education Committee said, "Its clear that there has been clear progress across Scotland, and just as the Liberal Democrat/Labour partnership in government in Scotland is delivering improved educational opportunities across Scotland, the Liberal Democrat/Labour partnership administration on Dundee City Council has viewed maximising the achievements of our young people at school as a clear priority.

"We have also viewed delivering new schools buildings and improved facilities as vital. We have embarked on an £85 million project to build new schools and improve our existing schools - this is due to be completed by Summer 2008."
