Dundee Liberal Democrats today (Friday 2nd March) gave their support to news that the Scottish Liberal Democrat Environment Minister Ross Finnie MSP is to take action to reduce carrier bag use by a quarter.

In a joint initiative between the UK retail industry and Environment Ministers in England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales, customers will be encouraged to reduce significantly the number and impact of carrier bags they use and to recycle more carrier bags where appropriate.

Mr Finnie said, "I want to reduce the amount of waste we produce. Stopping the unnecessary use of bags is one small but significant step to achieve this.

"It's clear that by working together, retailers, Government and consumers can all reduce the amount of waste and help the environment."

Here in Dundee, Liberal Democrat Councillor for Strathmartine and City Council Vice Convener of Environmental Services and Sustainability, Cllr Helen Dick, said, "Reducing plastic bag use is to be welcomed and it will be particularly welcomed in Dundee where we have an excellent record for recycling."
