Dundee Liberal Democrats welcome '2008: Women & the Vote'
Dundee LibDems today (Wednesday 13th February) welcomed the launch of '2008: Women & the Vote', an initiative marking 90 years of the Representation of the People Act which gave women in the UK the right to vote.
Events being held by the group include a meeting later this week on 'Scotland's and Europe's Women Working Together,' whose speakers include Elspeth Attwooll, LibDem MEP for Scotland.
North East Scotland LibDem MSP Alison McInnes pointed out the continuing under-representation of women in the UK parliaments. She said, "Women comprise a little more than half of the Scottish population, but it is notable that in the Scottish Parliament there are almost two male MSPs for every female MSP."
Here in Dundee, LibDem councillor Helen Dick said, "'2008: Women & the Vote' is an excellent initiative. More must be done to increase the numbers of women in public life both in Scotland and across the UK."
