Dundee Liberal Democrats welcome 10-point plan to tackle flooding across the UK
Dundee Liberal Democrats have today (Saturday 2nd February) welcomed plans published by the party to protect Britain from the worst effects of flooding.
The Met Office has warned that severe weather could become the norm over the next 25 years.
Liberal Democrat Leader Nick Clegg said, "The Government isn't taking the devastating potential of climate change seriously enough.
"We need to act now if we're to protect Britain from the flooding that could sweep Britain in years to come. Six months after last year's flooding, the Government has still done nothing to tackle the problem.
"We must invest more in our flood defences. The Government must stop building so many new homes in flood risk areas, and help families in high risk homes to get insurance."
Here in Dundee, Liberal Democrat Councillor for Strathmartine Ward, Cllr Helen Dick, said, "Flooding will be a risk for many more families across the UK, with torrential rain, stronger hurricanes and more violent storms on the increase.
"Global warming is blamed for the increased frequency of "extreme weather events" because warmer temperatures create more energetic weather systems.
"I am therefore pleased that the Liberal Democrats are taking this issue extremely seriously. I am also pleased, as a former Vice Convener of Environmental Services and Sustainability on the City Council, that Dundee City Council has taken a proactive stance on the issue of flood prevention."
