Dundee Liberal Democrats support call on new Post Office Card Account

29 Dec 2006

Following the Government announcement on the future of Post Office Limited, Dundee Liberal Democrats today (Friday 29th December) gave their support to calls by Liberal Democrat Work and Pensions Spokesperson, Danny Alexander MP for the successor to the Post Office Card Account (POCA) to be made freely available to all citizens.

Mr Alexander said, "It must be made clear to all pensioners and benefit claimants that they are free to switch to the new account. There must be none of the bullying and pressure to switch to a bank account that there was when POCA was first introduced."

Locally, here in Dundee, LibDem spokesperson Claire Matthew said, "It is vital that all citizens who want to continue to support their local Post Offices are given the opportunity to do so by free access to the new card account. Although we welcome Labour's u-turn on scrapping the concept of a card account, we hope the government recognises that free access to the new card account is important if local Post Offices are to be viable into the future."
