Dundee Liberal Democrats have slammed the inefficiency of Labour's Tax Credits scheme as new figures point to high levels of inefficiency and waste.

''It appears that the level of fraud and error in the Tax Credits system has doubled - reaching totally unacceptable levels,'' commented Dundee Liberal Democrat Councillor Helen Dick. ''The Labour government has failed at the first hurdle in its Tax Credits policy.''

Liberal Democrat Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary, David Laws MP said, '' The latest figures on tax credit fraud and error are likely to drive up the total cost of all benefits fraud and error to a new record high of £4 billion - £166 for every British household each year.

''Instead of continuing to seek to cover up the problems with fraud and error, the Treasury should replace Dawn Primarolo and take the tough action needed to reduce the high costs to taxpayers.''
