Dundee LibDems welcome National Veterans' Day

27 Jun 2006

Dundee Liberal Democrats today (Tuesday 27th June) welcomed the first ever National Veterans' Day. A series of events are being held across the UK to mark the event.

The day will be a permanent extension of Veterans' Awareness Week, which was held for the first time last year.

Dundee Liberal Democrat Councillor Helen Dick said, "I very much welcome the decision to commemorate our armed service veterans. Like millions of other citizens, I recognise the great debt of gratitude we owe to them. It is fitting that their great contribution is recognised."

27th June was chosen for National Veterans' Day as it came the day after the anniversary of the first investiture of the Victoria Cross, which happened in Hyde Park, London, in 1857.
