Dundee LibDems welcome Higher Education pledge

27 Apr 2007

Dundee LibDems today warmly welcomed the announcement by Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Nicol Stephen to support a campaign by Scottish Universities for £168 million of extra funding and 4000 new student places.

Mr Stephen also announced plans to scrap the graduate endowment, increase student grants and block any introduction of tuition fees or top up fees for Scottish students.

Nicol said, "Scotland's universities and colleges are amongst the best in the world.

"To compete in the global economy we must invest more in research and education. But we must go further.

"Abolishing the graduate endowment and increasing student grants will reduce student debt and encourage more people into higher education."

Locally, here in Dundee, Dundee West Parliamentary Candidate Michael Charlton said, "This is excellent news for students throughout Scotland and reaffirms the Liberal Democrat commitment to first-class education."
