Dundee LibDems slam water costs increase
Dundee Liberal Democrats today (Sunday 3rd February) strongly criticised the decision by Scottish Water to increase its charges by 3.74% for 2008-9 - an increase of 1.64% more than the Consumer Price Index.
The issue has already been highlighted by Scottish Liberal Democrat MSP Mike Rumbles who said, "Council tax payers who are expecting a council tax freeze will be shocked when they receive their bills.
"Water and sewerage charges are set to go up by an inflation busting 3.74 per cent, not much of a freeze here."
Locally, here in Dundee, Liberal Democrat Council Group Leader, Cllr Fraser Macpherson, said, "The SNP's so-called Council Tax freeze across Scotland is just so much spin. In Council Tax bills for the new financial year there will be inflation-busting water and sewerage charge increases.
"Particularly for low-income households, water and sewerage charges form a large part - and in the case of those on Income Support, the whole - of their Council Tax bill.
"The SNP Council Tax "freeze" is just a con, the spin of a government that simply doesn't understand the effect of high water charges, especially on low-income households."
