Dundee LibDems slam SNP's failure to fund education priorities

26 Apr 2008

Dundee LibDems today (Saturday 26th April) backed calls by Liberal Democrat Shadow Education Secretary, Jeremy Purvis MSP, who has called on the SNP to produce a clear funding strategy for its education policies.

This follows warnings from Education stakeholders that the SNP's education policies would require "massive investment."

Mr Purvis said, "Audit Scotland called on the Government to bring forward a clear financial strategy as to how it intends to fund new school build in Scotland. The SNP has refused to do so.

"The school building programme has stalled under the SNP and there is now considerable concern among parents that without a clear financial strategy, no government funding will be in place at all."

Here in Dundee LibDem City Council Group Leader and a former Education Convener in the City, Cllr Fraser Macpherson, added, "The SNP has simply not got the act together with its so-called "Scottish Futures Trust" which appears to be simply smoke and mirrors.

"Unless it acts promptly and effectively to provide a means of local authorities to fund its educational capital projects, the schools building and improvements programme across Scotland will simply grind to a near halt."
