Dundee LibDems say Westminster Government "twisting and turning" on ID cards
Dundee LibDems today (Thursday 6th March) said that the Labour Westminster Government was "twisting and turning" on ID cards, showing clearly that its ID cards policy is in tatters.
The government has set out changes to its planned identity scheme - including allowing people to use new "biometric" passports instead of getting ID cards. The plans for ID cards, linking personal data to a fingerprint, have been plagued by technical delays, budget overspend and political controversy.
LibDem Leader Nick Clegg MP said, "The Government is twisting and turning in an attempt to justify the unjustifiable. This new announcement will lead to the piecemeal introduction of an ID card database.
"However much ministers may seek to camouflage their true intentions until after the next General Election, the fact remains that it wants to build the world's most powerful, expensive and unnecessary database."
Here in Dundee, Cllr Helen Dick, councillor for Strathmartine Ward, said, "ID cards are proving to be a disaster for the Labour Westminster Government and there is less and less public support for this huge waste of public money."
