Dundee LibDems say we must accelerate the green switch

30 Oct 2006

Dundee East Liberal Democrat parliamentary spokesperson Dr Clive Sneddon has today (Monday 30th October) welcomed the Stern report and its clear statement that the economic costs of continuing as we are will be greater than the costs of acting now to limit climate change.

Clive said, "The Scottish Liberal Democrats are already committed to making the green switch to securing all Scotland's energy from renewable sources by 2050.

"There is growing all-party support for the principle of contraction and convergence, which means identifying how much carbon from each individual the planet can take, and reducing carbon emissions to that level. This principle is already widely supported in the developing world countries, which makes agreement on the necessary changes to save the planet entirely possible if the developed world acts now.

Clive concluded, "The government now has the opportunity of implementing Liberal Democrat proposals for green taxes before the next General Election, and should seize that opportunity.

"Scotland meantime has the possibility of achieving the green switch before 2050 if individuals and businesses recognise the truth of the Stern report and adopt the latest technologies for energy conservation and micro-generation."
