Clive Sneddon says all communities must live together

Dundee East Liberal Democrat parliamentary spokesperson Dr Clive Sneddon said today (Thursday 26th October) that he is pleased that Dundee's record on community harmony is better than in some parts of the UK, but deplores the recent attempts by both Tony Blair's New Labour Party and the Conservative Shadow Home Secretary to heighten community tensions in Britain.

Dr Sneddon said: "Liberal Democrats believe in freedom of religion as part of the human right to self expression within the law. Wearing the veil as an expression of religious belief is only right and proper, and should not be criticised.

"An informal survey by the Liberal Democrat MEP Sajjad Karim suggests that it is the media and public suspicion of Muslims in general which is fuelling a desire among some to make a public statement about their Muslim identity."

Dr Sneddon concluded: "At a time when all need to work together to combat violence, no one should be suspect for being Muslim, and all should work together to ensure respect and harmony between communities."
