Dundee LibDems rubbish Labour claims on Green Taxes
Dundee LibDems have today (Wednesday 9th August) have said claims by the Labour Westminster government that raising air travel taxes would only hit poorer people are "another example of Labour talking total rubbish."
The government was responding to a report from the House of Commons Environmental Audit Committee which said carbon dioxide emissions from aviation are set to rise five-fold and that the government has a "fatalistic" approach to the problem.
Liberal Democrat Shadow Environment Secretary, Chris Huhne MP said, "Ministers are talking nonsense about green taxes. Transport taxes such as a flight emissions tax or high Vehicle Excise Duty on new cars would not hit the less well off, because they do not drive gas guzzling cars or take regular flights.
"Yet the poorest in the world will be particularly hard hit by crop failures, drought and flooding if global warming continues."
Locally, Dundee LibDem Councillor Helen Dick, said, "Liberal Democrats have taken a responsible approach in supporting green taxes - contrast this with Labour's irresponsibility."
