Raymond Lawrie condemns Labour Government secrecy on ID cards

Raymond Lawrie, Convener of the Dundee Liberal Democrats, has today (Monday 23rd October) condemned government attempts to block the Information Commissioner's demand for the government to publish an analysis of progress on ID cards.

"The government is prepared to spend hundreds of thousands of pounds of taxpayers' money to stop them finding out how the money has been spent on ID cards" said Raymond. "This adds insult to injury for every taxpayer."

The Information Commissioner's demand resulted from an application from the Liberal Democrats under the Freedom of Information Act.

"The government cannot defend its decision to withhold information about the cost of their identity cards scheme," Raymond continued.

Liberal Democrat Shadow Home Secretary, Nick Clegg MP said, "The more the Government evades scrutiny on the ID card scheme, the more public suspicion will grow that it is an unwieldy, wasteful and unnecessary project."
