Dundee LibDems condemn announcement on demise of Post Office Card
Dundee Liberal Democrats today (Saturday 22nd July) condemned the news that earlier this week, Labour Government Ministers had announced that they intend to continue with their plans to abolish the Post Office Card Account despite massive public opposition.
''This is a disgraceful decision by the Labour Government,'' commented Dundee Liberal Democrat Strathmartine Ward Councillor Helen Dick. ''The loss of the Post Office Card Account will further erode the viability of local post offices. As someone who has witnessed the closure of a local post office in my own Strathmartine Ward area, I know what a loss this is to the local community.''
At Westminster, Liberal Democrat Work and Pensions spokesperson, Danny Alexander MP said, "Over the last few months hundreds of thousands of the four million people who use Post Office Card Accounts have signed petitions calling for it to be retained. Instead the Government seems to be relying on research among people who were forced to switch from POCA to argue that its demise is justified.''
Dundee Liberal Democrats have reiterated their determination to campaign to protect local post offices in Dundee saying that they are vital local community assets.
