Dundee LibDems back "financial devolution" to Councils call

2 Mar 2008

Dundee Liberal Democrats today (Sunday 2nd March) strongly backed calls by the President of the Scottish Liberal Democrats, Malcolm Bruce MP, that local authorities and health boards should get much more of their income from taxes raised in their areas.

Mr Bruce described it as "a radical stage further" in devolving power to local communities.

Locally, here in Dundee, LibDem Council Group Leader and former City Council Finance Convener, Cllr Fraser Macpherson, said, "I wholeheartedly endorse Malcolm Bruce's ideas to further extend devolution to local councils, health boards and local communities.

"Contrast this with a centralising Labour Westminster Government and an SNP administration at Holyrood that wants a "local" income tax decided centrally by John Swinney and not a penny decided locally at all."
