Dundee LibDems back call for the people of Britain to choose the next Prime Minister

Dundee Liberal Democrats have today (Sunday 13th May) backed calls by LibDem Leader Sir Menzies Campbell MP that Labour's choice of a new Prime Minister must be put to the people of Britain in a General Election.

The Liberal Democrats have tabled a parliamentary motion calling for an immediate general election, and have pointed out that a BBC Newsnight poll suggests that most voters back a quick general election, including over half of those who said they voted Labour.

Sir Menzies said, "Before the last General Election Tony Blair pledged to serve a full third term and the British electorate voted for him on this basis.

"Now the Prime Minister is leaving it is only right that the British public have their say on who will be their next Prime Minister."

Locally, Dundee Liberal Democrat party secretary Michael Charlton said, "The people of Britain should choose the next Prime Minister, rather than there being a Labour Party coronation of Gordon Brown. The latter is simply undemocratic."
