Dundee LibDem councillor signs Post Office Petition

4 May 2006

Dundee Liberal Democrat Group Leader Cllr Fraser Macpherson today (Thursday 4th May) lent his support to the campaign to save local Post Offices by signing a petition at the Perth Road Post Office in his Tay Bridges Ward.

Earlier this year, the Department for Work and Pensions decided not to extend the contract for the Post Office card account used by millions to collect benefits and pensions - beyond 2010. At the time, Fraser criticised this decision of the UK government, accusing it of presiding over the demise of local Post Offices.

Fraser said he believed that the government's refusal to renew this contract, worth £1 billion in income to the Post Office, could throw the future of some of Dundee's branches into doubt.

"I am pleased that our local Post Offices are campaigning on this issue and pleased to lend my support," commented Fraser.
