Dundee LibDem Convener says government "must finally reject ID cards"

1 Aug 2006

Recent news that leaked email messages have revealed that the government's plans to introduce ID cards by 2008 cannot be met has led Dundee Liberal Democrat local party Convener, Raymond Lawrie, to today (Tuesday 1st August) call for the ID cards project to be finally rejected.

The leaked e-mails have also revealed that the government is not prepared to accept this failure and are considering a scaled-down version, but even this is dismissed in the emails as not "even remotely feasible."

Raymond said, "Those of us who opposed the whole idea of ID cards did so on principle but we also warned ministers about the practical problems of implementing the scheme.

"The Labour government can still make an undignified but practical, u-turn on this policy, but I'm afraid it appears it cannot bring itself to do so."
