Scottish Liberal Democrat leader and health spokesperson Alex Cole-Hamilton has today called on the Scottish Government to take "decisive action" to tackle the increase in the number of operations lost to Covid, after new Liberal Democrat analysis shows that 329,243 operations have been lost since the pandemic first began.
Scottish Liberal Democrat analysis of Public Health Scotland figures has compared average pre-covid levels of NHS activity with the number of operations scheduled over the past two years.
The figures confirm that waiting lists continue to worsen because operations haven't reached anywhere close to pre-covid levels.
Mr Cole-Hamilton commented:
"These new figures show that no meaningful action is being taken to combat the backlog. The continuing loss of these procedures means thousands of people are in pain and suffering disruption waiting for vital operations.
"Services are being overwhelmed. With a lack of any decisive action from the Cabinet Secretary, it is clear that our NHS needs new hope.
"That is why Scottish Liberal Democrats have repeatedly called for an urgent new Burnout Prevention Strategy and a Health and Social Care Staff Assembly that puts their experience at the heart of the recovery. The government must act now; every plan he has to stem the backlog of operations is falling flat.
"The Health Secretary should come to parliament in the first week of the new term and set out when this backlog will be cleared."
