Responding to the announcement from the Scottish Government that it is to bring forward the timetable for farming support payments by almost a month to September 2022, Scottish Liberal Democrat agriculture spokesperson and Perth & Kinross councillor Clare McLaren said:

"From my conversations with farming representatives and communities, I know that this was a top priority, so I am glad to see the Scottish Government act.

"Farmers are at the sharp end of the cost-of-living crisis, with bills for energy, feed and fertiliser all rising sharply.

"In previous years there have been significant problems with the system used to deliver agricultural payments so it's important that these are operating smoothly and payments are delivered as swiftly as possible.

"Scottish Liberal Democrats will continue to press both of Scotland's governments for support on issues such as labour shortages, red tape and animal welfare standards. Farming communities around the country have been taken for granted for too long."
