Responding to A&E waiting times continuing to worsen, with 8,477 people waiting more than 4 hours (the second highest ever) during the week ending 5th June, Scottish Liberal Democrat leader and health spokesperson Alex Cole-Hamilton MSP commented:

"Waiting times in our A&E departments continue to worsen. Everyone needs SNP/Green ministers to be focused on what really matters right now.

"Instead they will spend today grandstanding about breaking up the UK, all the while devoting tens of millions of pounds to a referendum.

Patients deserve to be seen for treatment quickly and staff shouldn't be constantly overwhelmed, but under the SNP that seems less likely than ever.

"The Health Secretary must finally accept the need for an inquiry into avoidable deaths linked to the crisis in emergency care and stop opposing calls for a Burnout Prevention Strategy which would give staff extra protection."
