Responding to RCN Scotland's survey in which 86% of nursing staff said their last shift wasn't sufficiently staffed to meet the needs of patients safely and effectively, compromising care in the majority of cases, Scottish Liberal Democrat leader and health spokesperson Alex Cole-Hamilton MSP commented:
"Staff are working around the clock because the Scottish Government's botched workforce planning has left so many departments dreadfully short. The NHS is being overwhelmed.
"Everyone needs SNP/Green ministers to be focused on what really matters right now. Instead they are devoting tens of millions of pounds to a referendum and putting top officials to work on independence. Staff and patients are being taken for granted.
"Scottish Liberal Democrats have put forward plans to give new hope. Ministers were wrong to vote down my proposals for an urgent Burnout Prevention Strategy to give staff extra protection. I also want to see an NHS and Social Care Staff Assembly which puts their expertise and experience at the very heart of the recovery and planning of services."
