Responding to Public Health Scotland statistics showing the number of operations scheduled in April 2022 was 10,000 below pre-pandemic levels of NHS activity, Scottish Liberal Democrat leader and health spokesperson Alex Cole-Hamilton MSP commented:

"There are thousands of people waiting in pain and unable to get on in life, but the operations backlog is still getting longer and longer.

"This April alone there were 35% fewer operations scheduled compared to pre-pandemic. Both patients and staff need new hope.

"It shows why the SNP/Green Government are wrong to be devoting top officials and millions of pounds on independence. They were also wrong to vote down the Scottish Liberal Democrat calls for an urgent new Burnout Prevention Strategy for staff.

"Staff on the frontline need extra protection and if they aren't retained then every plan to stem the backlog of operations will fall flat."
