Responding to new figures published by the Scottish Government which show that around 65% - 2,940,000 - of those aged 16 or over in the country were overweight in 2018, Scottish Liberal Democrat health spokesperson Alex Cole-Hamilton MSP said:

"Lets not sugarcoat this. Scotland has a big problem with obesity and ill health.

"Too many people are eating poorly and not exercising enough. The Scottish government should be tackling this public health crisis with the same energy and ambition as the smoking ban.

"To start with we need to ensure that parents get the support they need to give their children a healthy start in life. Scottish Liberal Democrats would invest in sport and promote healthy lifestyles as well as extend the rights of GPs to social prescribing, including free access to exercise programmes if they judge it will help the health and wellbeing of an individual."
