Rennie: SNP have no answer on deficit or hard border

Responding to Derek Mackay's speech to the SNP conference on the economics of independence, Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Willie Rennie MSP said:

"The SNP's growth commission admits that an independent Scotland would have to introduce significant cuts or tax rises to get the deficit under control.

"Even worse, the First Minister has this week opened the door to a hard border between England and Scotland. For the nationalists any price is worth paying to break up the United Kingdom, even dividing friends and family and wrecking the economy.

"Instead of agitating for independence, the Economy Secretary should be investing in education and mental health to boost the economy and allow everyone to achieve their potential."
