Responding to the new report on single-use disposable beverage cups by the Expert Panel on Environmental Charging, which recommends the Scottish Government devise a "sustainable model" of consumption to address the thousands of tonnes of waste generated by coffee cups in Scotland each year, Scottish Liberal Democrat energy spokesperson Liam McArthur MSP said:

"The mountain of waste generated by single-use coffee cups in Scotland is embarrassing.

"Scottish Liberal Democrats want to see the government immediately implement a latte levy to curb their excessive use. It would work in much the same way as the plastic bag tax, which massively reduced usage and made people rethink their careless throwaway habits.

"This report reaches the worrying conclusion that the number of throwaway coffee cups is going to rise steeply over the next few years if specific interventions are not made. For all the talk of a climate crisis the SNP are stalling on making basic moves to stop this lazy trend. They must act now for the sake of the planet."
