Scottish Liberal Democrats have today warned that the UK Government's "chaotic and cavalier" approach to Brexit is putting council services and projects at risk, after it was revealed that Scotland's local authorities have obtained over £100m from the EU over the past three years.

Figures collected by the Scottish Liberal Democrats from 30 of Scotland's 32 councils, show that at least £106.4 million of funding has been assigned to local authorities from EU sources since 2015/16.

Projects supported by European Union funding included:

  • Intelligent street lighting in Perth & Kinross
  • Low carbon transport in Angus
  • Funding for the Aberdeen City and Shire Business Gateway
  • School milk for primary school children in East Lothian
  • Fibre optic broadband in Shetland
  • Galashiels Transport Interchange in the Scottish Borders
  • Maintaining the Hebridean Way in the Western Isles
  • More than £6m for the Queen's Quay district heating project in West Dunbartonshire

Sheila Ritchie, the Scottish Liberal Democrats' lead candidate in the European elections, commented:

"These figures show that the EU has provided more than £100m to support valuable projects across Scotland. From business development in the North East to transport projects in the Borders, EU funding has underpinned valuable work across Scotland, especially in Highland and Island areas that have too often been left behind by our own governments.

"Councils are already hard up after another year of tough settlements from central government and so far neither of our governments have stepped up to the plate to explain how the funding gap will be filled if we leave the European Union.

"Let's be blunt: it is the UK Government's chaotic and cavalier approach to Brexit which has brought us to this precipice.

"The will of the country has clearly shifted. It's time for a People's Vote and an exit from Brexit."
