Scottish Liberal Democrat justice spokesperson Liam McArthur MSP has today appealed for tolerance and reiterated the case for a people's vote, after hostility towards politicians was raised by the Scottish Police Authority (SPA) board.

Board members acknowledged the fact that people have the right to demonstrate, but stressed that politicians should be able to go about their business in safety. They noted the situation has become 'increasingly febrile' and expressed 'increasing concern about the hostile and aggressive context'.

Liam McArthur commented:

"Brexit is the one of the biggest issues of our time and fierce debate is fair and to be expected.

"But in recent weeks frustrations have spilled over in the form of threats, intimidation and abuse towards elected representatives and their staff.

"That's completely unacceptable. Everyone has the right to go to their workplace without feeling frightened. People across the political spectrum need to be tolerant."
