Scottish Liberal Democrat Leader Willie Rennie has called on Nicola Sturgeon and Richard Leonard to step up and support a people's vote, following the publication of a new report by the Fraser of Allander Institute which outlines the dangers of a no deal scenario.

The Institute notes:

  • "a 'hard-Brexit' would act as a significant drag on Scotland's - and the UK's - economic potential".
  • " a 'no-deal' outcome would cause hardship for many firms, workers and families across the UK".
  • "Sleepwalking into a 'no-deal' outcome cannot be viewed as an effective economic plan".

Willie Rennie said:

"Theresa May has confirmed 'no-deal' is now a real option. That's a disastrous outlook for Scotland and the UK as a whole.

"This report confirms it will be businesses and families that bear the brunt of these senseless decisions.

"The best thing for jobs and livelihoods is preserving the close ties with Europe we've benefited from for decades. Nicola Sturgeon and Richard Leonard need to step up, put the country first and back a people's vote on the final deal."
