Commenting after new figures showed 76,000 people in Scotland benefited from free personal and nursing care in 2016/17, with expenditure topping £500 million, Scottish Liberal Democrat social care spokesperson Karen Clark said:

"These figures show the value of the policy the Liberal Democrats introduced in the first Scottish Parliament.

"Extending help to under 65s with degenerative conditions - Frank's Law - can't come soon enough.

"However, problems have been allowed to mount on the Health Secretary's desk, with a recruitment crisis in the sector and people stuck in hospital for months on end because a care package can't be arranged for them. It is time that the Scottish Government sorted it out and Ruth Davidson's Tories admitted a hard Brexit would make the situation much worse."
