Liberal Democrat Scottish Affairs spokesperson Christine Jardine MP has today said that UK Government should remove the immigration cap for the whole UK, following a suggestion from the Reform Scotland think tank that Scotland should be exempted.

Ms Jardine said:

"Immigration enriches all our lives. People who come to the UK contribute to our economy, boost tax revenues, help pay for the public services we rely on and fill posts in sectors experiencing serious shortages.

"Without immigration, our health service would be on its knees, fruit and vegetables will rot in the fields and our universities will be diminished. But that is just as true in the rest of the UK as it is in Scotland.

"We need an immigration system that works for the whole of the the UK. That is why the Government needs to scrap its misguided and ideologically-driven target entirely."
