Thousands stuck in hospital in backlog of delayed discharges

Scottish Liberal Democrats today renewed their call on SNP Ministers to lay out their plans to reduce delayed discharges across the country, as new statistics show there were still over a thousand beds occupied by patients ready and waiting to leave hospital at the end of April 2018.

The vast majority were waiting for health and social care reasons which include waiting for an assessment, funding, a care home place or support to return home.

Scottish Liberal Democrat health spokesperson Alex Cole-Hamilton MSP commented:

"When a patient has been declared ready to leave even one extra unnecessary night in hospital can have a negative effect on their physical and mental health. I have helped constituents who have waited months on end.

"Despite what was promised by the integration of the health and social care the system is clearly not functioning properly, and patients, staff and services are suffering because of it.

"The Health Secretary must face up to this responsibility and devise, and publish, a realistic plan to reduce the backlog and cost of delayed discharges."
