"These new figures show that Scotland is moving in the right direction in tackling waste but the Scottish Government has the power to end the throwaway culture even sooner.

"At present, we use and chuck away a staggering 2.5 billion coffee cups each year in the UK. However, there is a growing realisation of the damage that waste on this epic scale is causing.

"They are needlessly contributing to the 4 million tonnes of waste that goes into Scottish landfill sites each year.

"The latte levy proposed by the Liberal Democrats would mean disposable coffee cups go the same way as plastic bags, the usage of which has reduced massively. It is time for the Scottish Government to finally commit to introducing this."
