Commenting on the announcement of an agreement between the Scottish Government and COSLA on funding for the expansion of early learning and childcare, Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Willie Rennie MSP commented:

"The trials and pilots testing how to deliver this expansion don't end until the summer. Parliament and the public will want assurances that these calculations are robust and that this funding is sufficient to enable families to take up their full entitlement to free childcare by 2020.

"The hard work is only just beginning. Audit Scotland recently warned that slow progress on increasing the workforce and infrastructure is putting this important policy at risk.

"These challenges must be overcome because we know investment in the early years makes a huge difference to a child's life chances."
