Speaking in response to emails released by the Public Audit Committee relating to the aborted return of Chief Constable Phil Gormley from special leave, Justice spokesperson Liam McArthur MSP said:

"This saga serves as yet further proof that the few individuals at the top of the SNP's centralised, secretive policing structure are all too close for comfort. Power is heavily concentrated in the hands of just a handful of people at the very top and that needs to change.

"The emergence of a secret meeting between the Chief Constable and a very senior civil servant and the suggestion that the SPA had planned some form of welfare arrangements to protect staff warrant an explanation from the Justice Secretary. Liberal Democrats have asked that he return to Parliament this week.

"It is also time for the police complaints body PIRC to tell us if they need extra resources in order to get the investigation into Phil Gormley finished so that all sides know where they stand."
