Commenting on the Scottish budget and suggestions from the IPPR that further tax rises could lie ahead, Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Willie Rennie said:

"The Liberal Democrats proposed a clear, limited and modest tax rise for education in order to invest in people and strengthen the long term Scottish economy.

"We still hope to persuade the Scottish Government of the merits of our case for the money we raise from the tax rise.

"We do not propose that a tax rise this year should automatically open the door for further tax rises next year. People need to have confidence that we are mindful of people's personal finances as well as the public finances. The Scottish Government needs to get that balance right."
