Responding to events at the SNP conference which saw Justice Secretary Michael Matheson confronted by an SNP member whose daughter resigned from Police Scotland over the "relentless" pressure of the job, Scottish Liberal Democrat MSP Alex Cole-Hamilton said:

"The police service are telling us that they are hamstrung by a lack of resources and the decision to cut valuable civilian expertise. Many of the benefits of centralisation that ministers promised simply haven't materialised.

"The SNP must recognise that their pursuit of centralisation at all costs has had a human cost. It is time they gave our hardworking police officers and staff the support they need and put their mistakes right."
