Responding to the news that the number of NHS complaints increased by 10% in 2016/17, Scottish Liberal Democrat health spokesperson Alex Cole-Hamilton MSP said:

"Doctors and nurses are operating under immense pressure. Last week research found more than half of nurses reporting their last shift was short staffed while 53% said patient care was being compromised.

"This is not fair on our hardworking NHS staff and has potentially grave consequences for patients.

"Scottish Government ministers must take immediate action to relieve the pressure on health service staff and deliver the sustainable workforce our NHS requires."
