Responding to new research from the independent Scottish Parliament Information Centre (SPICe) on the impact of business rates and ahead of the publication of the Barclay review tomorrow, Scottish Liberal Democrat economy spokesperson Councillor Carolyn Caddick commented:

"Hotels and pubs were hammered by big increases in business rates in 2010 and once again this year.

"The Scottish Government has made the same mistake twice by failing to give protection to this important part of our Scottish economy.

"While there has been some temporary mitigation for small businesses, the Government have not gone far enough in shielding new and upcoming businesses from dramatic rates rises."
