Responding to news that Zero Waste Scotland will investigate options, costs and benefits of how a deposit return scheme could operate, Scottish Liberal Democrat Environment Spokesperson Mariam Mahmood said:

"The evidence from our neighbours in Sweden, Denmark and Germany demonstrates that a deposit return system can successfully meet the challenges of waste reduction, decreasing the need for landfill and removing dangers to wildlife. That is why Liberal Democrats have proposed taking forward successful pilot projects on a deposit return system.

"It is therefore welcome news that Scottish Ministers have listened to campaigners and commissioned Zero Waste Scotland to investigate further. It is now imperative that questions concerning implications for local authority funding, investment in road-side recycling, and fundamentally who would operate a DRS are now answered."
