Responding to reports that Nicola Sturgeon is likely to make a statement on plans for a second independence referendum before recess, Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Willie Rennie MSP said:

"Any announcement from the First Minister must be to take another divisive independence referendum off the table. We all remember this time last year when Nicola Sturgeon rallied the independence troops in the hope it would change public opinion. It didn't.

"After a clear message from the electorate a few weeks ago the First Minister must take independence off the table or be seen to be ignoring the will of the people of Scotland."
