McArthur: Police Authority is secretive and unaccountable

Commenting after a Scottish Parliament Committee took evidence on the conduct of the Scottish Police Authority, including an allegation that the previous government-appointed chair of the SPA referred to a board member as a "one-trick diversity pony" in a document that was shredded when she sought a copy of it, Scottish Liberal Democrat justice spokesperson Liam McArthur MSP commented:

"The Committee heard examples of conduct that is utterly acceptable.

"The SPA has been disordered, secretive and unaccountable from day one. That can be traced directly back to the shoddy legislation the SNP forced through Parliament when they were hell-bent on centralising the police.

"This organisation remains a long way short of being fit for purpose. It handles billions of pounds of taxpayers money but, as today's meeting proved once again, is as transparent as mud.

"The Justice Secretary can't just watch this unfold. Liberal Democrats have set out clearly how we would inject democracy and accountability back into the police."
